Gauff beats Svitolina to defend Auckland Classic title

Coco Gauff, an adolescent from the United States, effectively defended her title at the Auckland Classic by recovering from a set deficit and defeating Elina Svitolina.

The US Open champion achieved her seventh victory in eight WTA singles finals throughout her career with a 6-3 6-3 victory (6-7 4-7).

Gauff, age 19, has achieved victory in 29 of her previous 33 singles contests.

In other news, Elena Rybakina defeated Aryna Sabalenka in a dominant straight-set victory to take the Brisbane International.

In a rematch of the Australian Open final from the previous year, where Sabalenka rallied from a set deficit to earn her first major title, Rybakina defeated the Belarusian 6-0 6-3.

In the men’s doubles final held in Brisbane, Lloyd Glasspool of Great Britain and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands prevailed over German top seeds Tim Putz and Kevin Krawietz 7-6 (7-3) 5-7 12-10 via a match tie-break.

In a match between the top two seeds, Danish 20-year-old Holger Rune will face Grigor Dimitrov in the men’s singles final later on Sunday.
The inaugural Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, commences in Melbourne on January 14.
